Intense Pulsed Light Technology

Using Intense Pulsed Light Technology and a specific wavelength, we are able to target the bacteria that is responsible for acne.  This treatment will also help reduce the post-inflammatory redness from previous breakouts. This results in clearer, more even skin. 

The treatment feels like a snap or flick on the skin. We are able to treat the face, neck, chest, back and wherever you have acne concerns. This treatment is safe for skin types 1 - IV and has minimal downtime.

What does treatment feel like and is it painful?

Treatment feels like a snap or flick on the skin. You may feel some warmth similar to a mild sunburn. The applicator has a cooling feature built in to make the treatment as comfortable as possible. More sensitive areas such as the upper lip may be less comfortable. Please let your Treatment Provider know how you are feeling and settings will be adjusted accordingly.

How long is each treatment?

Depending on the area of concern, treatments range from 15 – 30 minutes.

How many treatments are needed?

Depending on patient concerns, 8 – 12 treatments are recommended.

How often do I need to do treatments?

Treatments are done twice weekly for 4 or 6 weeks. It is best to space treatments apart by 3 or 4 days.

When will I see results and are they permanent?

Results continue to improve after your last treatment. You will see optimal results 3 months post treatment. Depending on the severity of the acne and how you take care of your skin at home following treatment will impact your results. Maintenance treatments are done as needed. We recommend maintenance treatments twice a month, then monthly, then longer.

What results are expected?

We anticipate a smoother texture, smaller pores and a reduction of acne.

Is it safe for all skin types?

These treatments work best for light to medium skin tones. It can work on darker skin tones but there is a higher risk of discoloration as there is more pigment present.

Is there any downtime?

Depending on the intensity of the treatment there may be a short period of downtime. You will spend some time with irritated skin and you will see any underlaying acne come to the surface of the skin. After the treatment your skin may be red and sensitive. It feels similar to a mild sunburn and can last anywhere from a few hours to a full day.

Do I need to do anything after my treatment?

You may apply sunscreen and make-up post treatment. Avoid the gym and hot showers for 2 days after your treatment. Use a gentle cleanser and non-irritating skincare. Avoid Retinols, AHAs and BHAs during this treatment process as it will irritate your skin. When you have completed your treatments, you may resume your normal skincare. Avoid tanning for 2 weeks prior and 2 weeks after your treatment. It is important to apply sunscreen (SPF30 or higher) everyday to maintain results and avoid sun damage.


Patients should not be treated if they are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to become pregnant.
If patients are taking any medications that make them light sensitive, or if they have a disease that is stimulated by heat or light, that can be a contraindication.
Patients should wait to do treatment if they have had any surgeries in the area within 3 – 6 months, cosmetic injections within the last 2 weeks or recent chemical peels or resurfacing treatments.
